The Scott Monument

The Scott Monument

Museums and Galleries Edinburgh

We were appointed to transform the category A-listed Scott Monument’s museum room into an engaging and interactive space to provide an introduction to the Monument and Sir Walter Scott’s legacy. The museum room is on the first floor of the Monument and although small is a spectacular double-height space in the very heart of the building.

We developed the interpretation to introduce Sir Walter Scott, and to enable visitors to explore the design, detail and decoration of the Monument as well as its conservation. Visitors are encouraged to discover more about the Monument using multi-lingual digital touch technology which enables them to interact by touching the existing A-listed glass panes. Our sensitive design approach respects the existing interior whilst creating a sense of discovery. Our work included research, copywriting, exhibition space planning, 3D design, graphic design and the design of digital interactives.

This backlit panel introduces Sir Walter Scott and the Monument which celebrates his achievements.

The Scott Monument is one of the most iconic Edinburgh landmarks, a must-visit for tourists and locals alike. Dedicated to Sir Walter Scott, it is one of the largest monuments to a writer anywhere in the world.

Tactile sandstone carvings explore the conservation and environmental factors which have affected the Scott Monument’s sandstone over the decades.

Visitors can interact with a digital timeline to explore the history of the Monument.

Digital interpretation is provided in multiple languages and integrated into the listed glass cabinets.

Hands-on opportunities enable visitors to explore some of the Monument’s carvings.

The designs were carefully integrated into the listed interior.
