We know that visitors learn through doing, participation and hands-on engagement, and we design robust bespoke interactives which communicate messages, reveal meanings and make learning fun.

Design of new Museum interpreting the story of internationally significant Kilmartin Glen – one of the UK’s most important archaeological landscapes. The Museum responds to the Glen’s unique sense of place as it takes visitors on a journey from the present-day, back in time over 10,000 years. The interpretation uses the power of the objects these early people left behind, together with the monuments they made and landscape they inhabited, to bring their stories to life.

This exciting new museum celebrates the story of Rangers Football Club, from humble beginnings in 1872 to its growth as one of the world’s most successful football clubs today. The Museum offers a dynamic, immersive experience, with visitor participation and interaction at its heart. The ability of the Museum to attract a wide audience, including day visitors, UK and international tourists, as well as football fans was central to the interpretation strategy. The Museum also explores the Club’s wider social and sporting history, extending its appeal to connect with a broad audience.

Adventure Planet is an exciting interactive children’s gallery at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh. The gallery aims to raise awareness and increase knowledge of biodiversity and conservation in children aged 3 to 8, and their families. Our brief was to communicate these topics in a safe and appropriate manner for the age group, which would lead to specific learning outcomes. We developed three themes: Marine, Woodland and Extinction and created an immersive and sensory space to engage children through touch, smell, sound and vision. We designed a range of fun and thought-provoking activities and interactive games to spark ideas about caring for wildlife and the steps we can take to preserve the natural world in our everyday lives.

Signage & Wayfinding

How we manage visitors on site is key to a positive experience. Effective signage and wayfinding play an important role in ensuring visitors understand what’s on offer and how to find their way around. As part of our service, we undertake detailed signage strategies, often across large and complex sites, to highlight the visitor journey and analyse the requirement for orientation, welcome, directional, naming and exterior signage.

We can develop new, or work with existing, branding and identities as part of delivering signage and wayfinding. We have extensive experience in ensuring accessibility of signage and regularly prototype and work with different user groups to test signage in advance of production. Our work encompasses digital signage across sites, both indoors and outdoors.

Provost Skene’s House

We were commissioned to give a new lease of life to Provost Skene’s House, the oldest surviving townhouse in Aberdeen dating from 1545. We developed the building as an exciting new visitor attraction celebrating 100 pioneering people of Aberdeen and the North-East of Scotland who have shaped the city and helped to transform the world. Spread over four floors, there are 12 themed galleries which explore all kinds of people from scientists, singers and sportspeople to authors, inventors and actors – game-changers across the generations.

As an extension of our research and interpretation work, we write and design a range of publications and guidebooks. These include official souvenir publications for sale, such as our work for The Scottish Parliament, Mercat Tours and Rangers Museum. We have also written several guidebooks for the National Trust for Scotland for properties including The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Culloden, Killiecrankie, Glencoe and the Glenfinnan Monument.

In addition, we regularly create and design print and publication material as part of our strategy for visitor engagement. This can range from activity booklets and interactive trails and guides to publications which support more complex or in-depth exhibitions. Our graphic designers also work closely with clients to design marketing and educational material to support the wider visitor offer. As part of our service we undertake picture research, licence clearance and print management and can also offer in-house illustration.

The National Wallace Monument

We were appointed on a design and build contract to refurbish the galleries within The National Wallace Monument in Stirling as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the building. Our brief was to ‘tell the story of William Wallace better than it has ever been told before’. To achieve this, we took visitors on a physical journey through the exhibition spaces using dynamic storytelling and innovative digital interpretation to build drama and encourage visitors to engage, explore and connect with Wallace’s story.

We were initially appointed at Rosslyn Chapel in 2005 to develop a strategy for managing the unprecedented number of visitors following the publication of ‘The Da Vinci Code’. We were subsequently appointed to develop the interpretive plan for the site which formed part of the successful NLHF bid for a new visitor centre which we went on to deliver. Our work encompassed the design of cafe and gift shop and the design and implementation of the signage strategy across the site. We continue to work with the Trust providing on-going support for interpretation, as well as designing marketing and educational material, and have played a key role in helping to develop a range of themed collections for the gift shop, creating bespoke packaging, branding and point of sale.
