Provost Skene’s House

We were commissioned to give a new lease of life to Provost Skene’s House, the oldest surviving townhouse in Aberdeen dating from 1545. We developed the building as an exciting new visitor attraction celebrating 100 pioneering people of Aberdeen and the North-East of Scotland who have shaped the city and helped to transform the world. Spread over four floors, there are 12 themed galleries which explore all kinds of people from scientists, singers and sportspeople to authors, inventors and actors – game-changers across the generations.

As an extension of our research and interpretation work, we write and design a range of publications and guidebooks. These include official souvenir publications for sale, such as our work for The Scottish Parliament, Mercat Tours and Rangers Museum. We have also written several guidebooks for the National Trust for Scotland for properties including The Robert Burns Birthplace Museum, Culloden, Killiecrankie, Glencoe and the Glenfinnan Monument.

In addition, we regularly create and design print and publication material as part of our strategy for visitor engagement. This can range from activity booklets and interactive trails and guides to publications which support more complex or in-depth exhibitions. Our graphic designers also work closely with clients to design marketing and educational material to support the wider visitor offer. As part of our service we undertake picture research, licence clearance and print management and can also offer in-house illustration.

The National Wallace Monument

We were appointed on a design and build contract to refurbish the galleries within The National Wallace Monument in Stirling as part of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the building. Our brief was to ‘tell the story of William Wallace better than it has ever been told before’. To achieve this, we took visitors on a physical journey through the exhibition spaces using dynamic storytelling and innovative digital interpretation to build drama and encourage visitors to engage, explore and connect with Wallace’s story.

We were initially appointed at Rosslyn Chapel in 2005 to develop a strategy for managing the unprecedented number of visitors following the publication of ‘The Da Vinci Code’. We were subsequently appointed to develop the interpretive plan for the site which formed part of the successful NLHF bid for a new visitor centre which we went on to deliver. Our work encompassed the design of cafe and gift shop and the design and implementation of the signage strategy across the site. We continue to work with the Trust providing on-going support for interpretation, as well as designing marketing and educational material, and have played a key role in helping to develop a range of themed collections for the gift shop, creating bespoke packaging, branding and point of sale.

Mackintosh at the Willow

Design of world-class visitor attraction for Mackintosh at the Willow, spanning two floors and adjoining the original Willow Tea Rooms. The interpretive exhibition tells the story of the pioneering partnership of Charles Rennie Mackintosh and his most loyal patron, Miss Catherine Cranston, set against the context of late Victorian and Edwardian Glasgow. The displays are designed to engage a wide range of visitors from local people to specialist interest visitors, from school groups and families to international audiences.

We have worked extensively with Rosslyn Chapel since 2005 to help develop their visitor offer. As an extension of our interpretation work, we have helped to create site specific merchandise and have developed a number of themed collections with supporting point of sale, bespoke packaging and branding. These range from Chapel-related products presented through ‘A Treasure in Stone’, to the ‘Countess Collection’ with bespoke toiletries and stationery, from children’s products in the ‘William the Chapel Cat’ collection to luxury packaging for limited edition whisky and gin.

We have also developed a range of merchandise for Scottish Canals and have worked with the National Trust for Scotland on packaging for the development of the Kitchen Garden at Culzean Castle.

Design of the first major exhibition dedicated to Scottish pop music at the National Museum of Scotland. The exhibition takes visitors on a journey exploring over 50 years of Scotland’s musical culture through a wealth of material, much of it loaned directly from the artists themselves. The exhibition features artists and bands including Lonnie Donegan, Gerry Rafferty, the Sensational Alex Harvey Band, Lulu, The Rezillos, Midge Ure, Simple Minds, The Skids, Big Country, Garbage, Franz Ferdinand and Young Fathers, amongst others.

Horrible Histories® Blitzed Brits

Working with Scholastic Children’s Books, publisher of the Horrible Histories®, we developed a highly experiential, engaging and interactive exhibition on the theme of the Second World War Blitz to mark the 75th anniversary of the War. The exhibition, at the Imperial War Museum North, combined personal stories and displayed over 200 objects, photographs, art works, film and sound recordings to reveal how the Blitz brought the War to the doorsteps of Britain. Using the visual style of the Horrible Histories® brand we created a series of three-dimensional immersive environments to lead visitors on a physical journey through the Blitz.

Exhibition design and build for the new Scottish Cup Gallery within the Scottish Football Museum at Hampden Park, Glasgow. The exhibition celebrates the 150th anniversary of the Scottish Cup, the oldest national football trophy in the world. This iconic object links generations of players and supporters over the last century and a half and informed our approach to creating a footballing and social history timeline.

Design of major exhibition at the National Museum of Scotland, exploring the real story and cultural heritage of Prince Charles Edward Stuart and the rise and fall of the Jacobites – Am Prionnsa Teàrlach agus na Seumasaich. The exhibition immersed visitors in the world of the Royal House of Stuart, a dynasty divided into two courts by religion, politics and war, each fighting for the throne of the three kingdoms of Scotland, England and Ireland. Interpretation explored how four Jacobite kings became pawns in a much wider European political game and followed the Jacobites’ fight to regain their lost kingdoms. We displayed exquisite objects, and incorporated film, music and digital interactives to bring the events of this turbulent period in European history to life. Multi-lingual interpretation was provided in Gaelic and English.
